About

"For me eating together is something that nurtures relationships and offers a sense of family and belonging. It allows for stories to be shared, and things to be learned. Being present with what we consume and aware of the various steps involved to get the food onto our plates is something I respect and encourage people to do. We are all a part of nature, and nourishing ourselves from the world around us is something not to be taken for granted. I have been vegan for about 8 years now, and have found that in this time I have discovered a whole new way of eating, tasting and appreciating food."
Veganism made me more food curious
My name is Emma and I am a self taught chef working in Cape Town. I have always been interested in eating good food - having grown up in a family that put great value on good quality produce, living on farms and often growing a lot of our own fruit and veggies. My love for cooking really emerged fully when I went vegan in 2018. This shift drew me to trying new flavours and cooking methods - allowing for so much more creativity in the kitchen.

Discovering the ideas of Permaculture
Exposing myself to the ideas and principles of permaculture became another step in becoming more interested in the food system as a whole. Doing a 2 week permaculture design course in the Klein Karoo taught me so much, but most importantly to observe the land and learn from our environment. Re-learning to look and smell and listen, how do we fit into this thing called nature?
I ended up working on that farm for a few months, and it was honestly a time I felt the most alive.
This is a place our food should come from!
Learning about food through cycling across Africa
In September 2022 my brother and I set off to cycle from Berlin to Cape Town. This had been a dream of ours for years, to travel in a way that allowed us to spend time learning more about (specifically) the African continent. We had a tight budget, and mostly cooked on our multi-fuel stove, using ingredients from a long the roadside. This in combination with snacking on street food was the ultimate way to learn about the everyday food people ate. Being invited into homes and offered home cooked meals was such a treat, seeing how local ingredients were prepared into dishes I'd never seen.

One thing I learned in Uganda is how to use raw peanuts to make a creamy stew. Peanuts are high in protein and fat, affordable, and the raw nut has very little of that distinct peanut flavour. You can buy little bags of ground peanuts practically anywhere in Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and Kenya.

Join our next supper club!

My partner Fritz and I have started hosting pop ups in the form of a supper club. The idea is to bring people together around one long table and share an evening of making new connections and eating scrumptious food.
We love to cook in a way that makes you feel like you're at a family dinner - big platters of colourful food to pass around and share. As with all food at Social Vegan Eatery, these dinners focus on seasonal fruit and veggies, whole foods and most importantly diversity.
Bring your friends or come on your own to meet some new people.Drinks will be available on the evening, so all you need is to come hungry!Join our whatsapp group below to find out about future events.
